My dear Mr. William
Smith Elder and Co. have now made the proposal of which I spoke to you as probable, namely, to publish an 'e9dition de luxe of Romola, corresponding with that of Thackeray's works, and I have assented. 372 I mention this to you again, lest in the press of matters on you when you were in town, the fact of our having spoken on this subject may have dropped from your memory. You will now probably recall your having concurred in the idea that such an edition would be rather an advantage to the already existing editions, as bringing the work into relief and aiding in its advertisement.
I see that the new edition of the [Sayings] is brought out and I should be much obliged if you would order a copy to be sent to me that I may see what Mr. Main has extracted from [Deronda] and [Theophrastus.]
I am looking forward to the reception of my account of last year's sales, which you mentioned as being in preparation. Those figures which tell of distribution are the criticism of my books which I most care about.
I hope that the troublesome business Mr. Langford has on hand is proceeding auspiciously and that you are keeping free from your attacks of cold.
