My dear Major Blackwood
A week ago Mr. John Blackwood sent me word that you were about to begin the printing of a cheaper edition of "The Mill," and that I could make any alterations, if I chose. There is only one I want to make, but as it is on p. 50 of the 1st volume it is very likely too late for me to mention it. Instead of "close by the brink of the Ripple," at line 11 I wish to be read, "at the other end of the Mill Fields." 616
Mr. John Blackwood, at the same time, gave us the hope that we should see you at the end of this month. I hope we shall not be disappointed.
Two people who see literary society have teazed me with questions about the sale of the Mill, as if they had not noticed the advertisement: I wish the lettering of the advertisement could be managed so as to prevent this sort of ignorance, or rather of ignoring. Will you be kind enough to suggest this to Mr. Simpson's typographical judgment? I am naturally jealous for "The Mill," which is my youngest child, and don't like that those who depreciate it themselves should suppose that everybody else shares their partialities.
This is really saddening weather -- is it not? -- with the harvest time so close at hand.
