Mr. Bray and I discussed Mr. Chapman's affairs fully, and I found a number of discrepancies between the Statement given to me and that given to Mr. Bray, and after hearing every explanation that Mr. Bray could give, I continued to be of opinion that Mr. Chapman is deficient in business talent, in conscientiousness, and in real depth of intellect. He has great ambition, Benevolence, and a sympathy with liberal views, but transcendentally rather than practically. Mr. Bray said that 5 friends have lent him 'a3100 each, and the printer 131 and stationer of the Westminster Review have advanced him 'a3500 on the security of the copy right of it, and that with these sums he will go on. I prophesied that he will need more aid within two years. Mr. Bray hopes he may make a fortune; yet he sees his defects.
