My dear Sir
I am truly sorry to hear of so much bad health in your domestic circle, and hope that it may soon cease. We send our sympathies to the sufferers. 53
I have received, and now send you, another letter dated 20 November from Mr. Lombe, which please return. I have written to him today that in my opinion he cannot be made liable for the debts of the Review by your announcing "a donation" from him of 'a3200 a year. But, as you have apparently gone too far in making the statement general in place of particular, I think that you should write to him calmly, renouncing all claim to 'a3200 a year for general purposes, and that you accept of his gifts for particular articles as he proposes. I have told him that you may have made a mistake, but could have had no intention of either "cheating" or "lieing." These are opprobrious terms, but they are not addressed to you.
