My Dear Mr. Lewes
We are very sorry to hear about Mrs. Lewes and hope she will soon be quite well again.
Many thanks for the preface. It may not be possible to print it in full, but what is given shall be in your own words. You need not be deterred from asserting your claims by anything I have said in the supplement hurriedly tagged to my little paper, read months ago to the Metaphysical Society and which Knowles would have to be printed. In adding the supplementary remarks a short time ago, I had in view, besides odd essays like Clifford's and Pollock's, chiefly Leslie Stephen's new book, 358 which I have read since the paper was written and which has certainly struck me as saturated with the notion of the overshadowing influence of society. Maudsley 359 also has a number of passages (though plainly inspired by Comte) which point the right way. Even in Spencer, I have in the last few days come across a passage which is worth looking at -- Psychology II. 'a7 493. And for myself I may say that anything there is in this paper -- and there is more implied than could be set forth -- has been taking shape in my mind for quite a number of years past. But I regret that when it did seem to me in writing, first to remark on Mill etc. and then to mention you, I did not look up your first volume and do more justice to your emphatic statement of the position as fundamental in psychology.
