My dear Sir
Thanks for the sight of enclosed which I think prove that [at] the date they were written no unpleasant feeling possessed the mind of the writer towards any member of the firm. My own notion is that the motive is insatiable greed, and with such a disposition it is most unpleasant to deal.
Pray take no notice of my communication, for in reply to a remark of mine that you should be informed, Mr John answered very impatiently as if he were disgusted with the affair and did not care to have anything more to say about it or the parties, and this after he had said he would write you. The Major is thoroughly out of conceit at them.
Be prepared to advise whether cheap Edition shall be 6/, 5/ or 2/6. I am hankering for another 2000 in 2 volumes as a Library Edition 'e0 la Bulwer.
A Reverend Gentleman who had Miss Evans as a pupil is in Edinburgh just now enlightening the fashionable circles with her early history and that of Amos Barton, and it was this Clergyman's house where the Meetings of Clergy were held referred to in A. Barton. 383 He by the bye gives proof that there is no want of invention in the mind of the author of A Bede, for he says that while A Barton is truly painted from the Life, also the Polish Countess and her protector, the wife Mrs Barton is purely imaginary.
I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Kipling's state of health. What a distressing position for his Wife! How sadly sickness must have changed this once happy circle to which you could always come with a certainty of cheerful welcome.
