My dear Madam
It was only yesterday that I clearly understood from Mr. Lewes that I was to regard "Brother Jacob" as a present from you. 615 I can hardly tell you how much I was touched and gratified by your kindness. The gift is a princely one in value, and it comes to me at a time when it is even more than ordinarily valuable; but you will I am sure understand me, when I say, that it is not chiefly on that account that I am pleased at receiving such a present from you. I hope that I may regard it as an indication of your satisfaction with the manner in which our business relations have been conducted as well as of your feeling of personal kindness towards myself. And I value your good opinion so highly that such an expression of it is deeply gratifying to me.
