Thursday 18 May 1876
Lussana e Lemoigne. 480 Problems. Blackwood to lunch -- full of the success of Deronda. We dined at Lady Portsmouth's 481 -- present Lord Carnarvon (who took Polly down), Lord and Lady Abercromby, Lord Ramsay, Lord O'Hagan, Grant Duff, Adams the astronomer, Meredith Townsend, Lady Catherine and Lady Lilly. Very pleasant talk with Lord O'Hagan and Lady Portsmouth. Lady Catherine said to me what a delight it was to see Polly's "saintly face again." Home at 11.15.

Lussana e Lemoigne. Problems. Park. Mrs. Pattison and Mrs. Burne Jones. Dr. Andrew Clarke called to see Polly and prescribed for my throat. Middlemarch.
Saturday 20 May 1876
Lussana. Wrote letters and pottered. Went on a visit to Oxford -- to Jowett. Mr. and Mrs. George Howard, Mr. Charles Howard, 482 Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Symonds, and Mr. and Mrs. Ilbert 483 the other guests. Supped at New Hall -- part-singing by the choir -- very sweet.

Fatiguing and exciting day. Called on Rolleston.
Monday 22 May 1876
Returned home by 2.30. The Howards and Lord Aberdare 484 came with us. Had a walk in Park with Polly and went to Mummery. [Middlemarch.] Letter from Lord Lytton -- full of hope and visions of great things to be done, but sadly disappointed with the official help he receives. Red tape!
