Friday, 13 September 1872
This afternoon we started for Six Mile Bottom, the estate which Hall has recently inherited. Polly very unwell, was quite knocked up by the time we arrived. Found there Mrs. [Cross], Emily, Florence and Johnnie Cross, Albert Druce, and Mr. Patterson.
Saturday, 14 September 1872
Went over the estate, and visited farms, etc. In the afternoon drove out. Saw the pheasants fed. Ferocious bull-mastiff belonging to the Keeper! A Mr. and Mrs. Lethbridge came to dinner.
Sunday, 15 September 1872
Today besides various rambles and a drive we paid a visit to a wealthy farmer -- Nash -- a sort of Martin Poyser -- with a hearty wife and a lovely daughter of the Dudu 595 type. His house and gardens were perfect. Taken over the place and shown the dogs, fowls, horses, barns, etc. Then came in and had tea; and drove home in the setting sunlight. Augustine G[o]ulden. 596 Music and chat after dinner. Mrs. Cross accompanying Polly into her bedroom caught fire with her widow's streamers at the candle. Fortunately it was soon put out, and no great damage done, but Polly had a slight hysterical fit from the shock.
Monday, 16 September 1872
Polly awoke with dreadful headache and sickness. This delayed our departure till the midday train. Reached home at 5; she very unwell. Went early to bed.
Tuesday, 17 September 1872
Polly somewhat better. Corrected proofs of [Middlemarch] and wrote to Mr. Cyples 597 who has dedicated a work to me which he sent. Slept at Dover.
