Saturday 8 May 1869
Mill's Analysis. 64 Went to Mother. Thornie came home. Dreadfully shocked to see him so worn; but his spirits good and he listened with pleasure to the music.
Sunday 9 May 1869
A dreadful day -- Thornie rolling on the floor in agony. 65 Paget 66 came in the evening and examined him. Up 4 times in the night to give him morphia etc.
Monday 10 May 1869
Went into town, and got a prone couch for Thornie. All day nursing him. He quiet, but suffering from the morphia given yesterday. Mr. Roberts 67 (surgeon) called to see him.
Tuesday 11 May 1869
Thornie passed a quiet night without pain. Went to Mother, and into town to get a new pillow for Thornie. Nursed him all day. In the evening he got excited talking about his African experiences and singing Zulu songs. Made anxious about him. Mr. Roberts called.
Wednesday 12 May 1869
Thornie had another quiet night. Read Mill -- looked over some parts of [Problems.] Went into town and spent the rest of the day with Thornie.
Thursday 13 May 1869
Another quiet night -- there is a [break in the clouds.] Read Mill and went to see Susannah; found her out. Barbara and Owen Jones called. Fields, American publisher, called and made proposition about uniform edition of George Eliot -- also offered 300 £ for a poem (Agatha) to appear in Atlantic.
