Caird. Went on our visit to Jowett at Oxford. Spottiswoode, 681 his wife and her sister, the other guests. Dinner party of 16: Sir C. and Lady Trevelyan, 682 Dean Liddell, Green 683 etc.
Sunday 20 May 1877
Sunday called on Henry Smith and Rolleston, at whose house met Prof. Turner, 684 and Lady Richardson. 685 16 again at dinner -- Stubbs, 686 Bradley, 687 Sir C. Trevelyan, Butcher 688 etc.
Monday 21 May 1877
After breakfast smoked a cigar and chatted with Mark Pattison. Home by 3. Walk. Read Wilson Fox on Dyspepsia. 689 Henry Taylor's Autobiography. 690 Paget's Hunterian Oration. 691
Stout elderly lady in a crowded room is accosted with "I fear you can find nothing to sit on?" "It isn't that, but I can't find a place for it."
