Wednesday 4 October 1876
We went on a visit to the Halls at Six Mile Bottom. M. Scherer 535 was the only visitor today. He took a long walk with us -- superb sunset.
Thursday 5 October 1876
Today our party was encreased by the Sidgwicks, a German, and Dr. Paget 536 (the latter only to dinner). After lunch we drove to New-market to visit the stables of a trainer. Saw Kisber, the winner of the Derby and Grand Prix -- a beautiful creature. Other horses -- dogs -- and the trainer himself a refined Bambridge 537 who said the Baroness Rothschild, 538 whose picture he showed us, was a beautiful skinned lady! He treated Polly with great deference, always styling her My Lady and much struck by her having pointed out a defect in the build of Kisber. 539
Friday 6 October 1876
Today Mrs. Higford Burr 540 joined the party and at dinner Dr. and Mrs. Humphry. 541 Very pleasant. I played Lawn Tennis with the Sidgwicks after lunch and read Heyse, Die Kinder der Welt. Dr. Paget told us of an auctioneer who was kicked down stairs and at the bottom shook his fist exclaiming "Another kick, sir, and you'll rouse the lion in me." He afterwards went insane and continued "knocking down" every object he saw to an imaginary buyer. He would sit in his garden and [put up] the trees or cattle. One day at Church he [knocked down] the preacher "tub and all" for 5/6.

Came home at 4 to find several letters and parcels. . . .
