GHL Diary, Witley, 12 August 1878
MS: Mrs. Robert Nuttall. Extracts published: Kitchel, p. 284.
Monday 12 August 1878
Both had bad headaches this morning. Read Sch'fcle. 119 At 'bd past 10 started in a fierce storm for Tennyson's, leaving Polly at home as too unwell. Mrs. Greville and myself were the only visitors, and after lunch I read his not yet finished drama of A Becket on which he was anxious to have my critical opinion. 120 Greatly interested by many scenes of it, though I had some serious doubts which I did not express, and some doubts which I did. These he asked me to write down and send him that he might not forget them. Mrs. Greville drove me home; found Polly in bed with sick headache. Sat with her all the evening.
