Thursday 10th.
Polly had her warm bath, and on the sands afterwards she opened to me her secret desire of going from Barcelona to Granada. The idea quite fired me and it was almost resolved on. To prepare ourselves bought a Spanish conversation book and grammar; and taking the former in my pocket, as we walked I asked her words and phrases over and over again to impress them on our minds. This gave a new and amusing variety to our walks besides being a most efficient mode of learning to speak. Came back to lunch and found a letter from Charles and Gertrude; the latter telling of Susanna being £55.10 in debt and urging me to release her from it at once. -- Continued our Spanish exercise. No sunset to-day, the sky overcast.

Read Comte. Wrote to Charles and to Susanna sending her the checque. Spanish exercise. The weather boisterous and rainy. It cleared towards sunset, but there was no flame in the western sky.
