Saturday 1 March.
Began the revision and rewriting of the Life of Goethe.
George Smith called. On examining his engagements he finds it impracticable to delay the publication of Polly's new work in the Magazine till August or September. This project is therefore finally abandoned. But he is very anxious to publish her book and we discussed the plan of a sixpenny serial, also of publishing the book at once at 6/. On these points he is to make calculations and then make a new proposal.
Although I regret the loss of such an opportunity of £10,000, I am just as well pleased that Polly should not be hurried and flurried, by being bound to appear at an earlier date than she would like.
In the evening George Scharf, Burton, Spencer, Desmond, Pigott and Redford came. Kept it up till past 12 very pleasantly with talk and music.
