Friday 10 January.
On Wednesday night returned from a fortnight's run to Bonn and Heidelberg. 719 The visit was in many respects eminently fruitful and instructive besides being very pleasant in spite of the bitter cold. Max Schultze was kindness itself and with him I spent the greater part of the time at Bonn, discussing microscoping etc. Pfl'fcger also showed me some interesting experiments and gave me three of his works. Boll, Rindfleisch, Preyer, Veit, R'fchle, Bernays, Mrs. Klinglemann, also seen. Dined out each day, and supped out also. The Preyer family very agreeable.
At Heidelberg I saw Helmholtz, Kirchoff, Zeller, Gervinus, the three Arnolds, Wundt, Friedrich, Hoffmeister, Kopp, and several less distinguished men. The elder Arnold three days in succession went over his preparations of the Brain with me -- most instructive. Friedrich also showed me a case of Ataxy -- without the slightest loss of sensibility.
Found my [Seaside Studies] and [Physiology] universally known to the men of science and the [Goethe] still continues to be read by everyone.
