Tuesday 13 June.
Breakfasted with Lord Houghton: present the Bishop of Minnesota -- the pleasantest American I ever met. 345 Ranke, the historian of the Popes, 346 who seemed pleased to know the author of the Life of Goethe and promised to write for our Review, Arrivabene, Clark, 347 Sir J. Lacaita, 348 Wollowski 349 who is also to write, Arthur Russell and a Mr. Cartwright. 350 Very agreeable talk.
Sat with Polly for two hours in the garden discussing her novel and psychological problems. Called on Bell to see about a series of papers on Town Life of the Restoration. Went to Her Majesty's -- Cherubini's Medea 351 -- very fine, large, and simple. Titiens, 352 not equal to Medea but sang well.
The Fortnightly Rev. at present a great success and I rather like the work. I continue to do a good deal for the Pall Mall Gazette and earn £60 a month by it.
