Saturday 17th.
This last week has been a busy one. Polly one evening read several chapters of Romola to George Smith, in order that before finally making any proposals he should know the kind of work it was to be. He dissuaded us from the notion of a serial, believing that it would not tell in small portions. He wishes to publish it in the [Cornhill Magazine,] but in considerable instalments -- of 45 or 40 pages each number, with two illustrations. He is to send a proposal on that basis. 65 Besides this I have been a good deal occupied reading proofs, and arranging matters for the Magazine. On Wednesday we went to the New Philharmonic and tonight we go to the opera to see Rigoletto, G. Smith having given us his stalls.
Another incident in the week has been a severely painful one to both of us. Anthony Trollope came to lunch, and heard with surprise that Charley was back in his old office, not having any advancement. He inquired into the cause, and wrote me a kind, candid, but painful letter 66 telling me that the boy was not doing well, was careless, slow, and inefficient. This completely upset me, and brought on a bilious attack.
On Wednesday we hired a Brougham for the day; went to the Printroom of the British Museum to see Italian portraits of 15th cent. Did shopping. Sent up for Mother, who came to lunch with us. Took her to the Zoological Gardens. Had two puppy bears taken out of the cage to play with, and suck my fingers!
