April.
My forty sixth birthday. A day which naturally sets the mind into retrospects, not always the most cheerful attitude.
Since the last entry nothing noticeable has occurred. We have been twice to Dorking and I shall take Polly there again on Monday, leaving her there during my trip to Hofwyl to see Bertie. Of work, Aristotle, and some investigation into Roman history -- especially under the Empire, have principally occupied me. I have written a paper Was Nero a Monster? 151 as a result of the latter, having been deeply impressed with the untrustworthiness of all the historians.
I have also seen Sir Chas. Nicholson 152 and had his advice about Bertie, whom we are thinking of sending to Australia as a farmer in a few years, when he has learned enough and is old enough.
I have also made it up with Susanna; or rather have had the long misunderstanding partially cleared up, and the estrangement removed. Have seen her several times, and Polly will see her on my return from Switzerland.
