Saturday 6th October.
On Thursday night (27th) Thornie arrived from Switzerland and stayed with us till Sunday night when I took him by mail train to Edinburgh where he is to attend the High School for ten months. At Edinburgh I stayed till Thursday morning, making all arrangements about Thornie's classes, and residence in Mr. George Robertson's family -- with the whole of which there is every reason to be satisfied, as far as one can judge beforehand. I also did a great deal of visiting, saw Goodsir who showed me over the anat[omical] museum, Simpson, Laycock, 643 Blackie, Rogers, 644 the geologist, Dr. MacVicar, 645 the Schmitzs, Lankester etc. Blackwood gave us a dinner at the Hotel at which Rev. James White, Simpson, Stephens, 646 James and Willie Blackwood were present. With Blackwood I talked over proposed books of Lives of the Elder Naturalists (to appear in Maga) and Physiology and Chemistry for Schools (abridgements of mine and Johnston's books) 647 as well as some articles for the Magazine. Yesterday I went into town and Langford gave me a letter to Laurence 648 of Old Jewry Chambers, who is to be our solicitor. With him I consulted about investments, and he took me to his stockbroker, who undertook to purchase 95 shares in the Great Indian Peninsular Railway for Polly. For 1825 £ she gets 1900 £ worth of stock guaranteed 5%. Saw Mrs. Nutt and Tr'fcbner and came home very tired to dinner. To-day wrote to Blackwood making a proposition about "The Physiology for Schools" -- and several business letters.
