We left Petersthal on the 1st with many regrets and resolutions to come back some future summer. Although I had preserved my incognito by declaring myself, when asked, to be the relative of the Mr. Lewes I could not resist revealing the fact to a very pretty, cultivated and charming girl whom I sat next to a[t] dinner during the last week, the daughter of the Austrian Consul at Helsingfors. 787 I stipulated that she was not to betray me until after our departure; but although the secret had only to be kept two days it was too much for her and about an hour before our departure the news had run over Petersthal. The Landlord seemed overwhelmed with the "honor his establishment had received"; several gentlemen and ladies came to express their enthusiasm and to beg my card; and all the guests assembled to see us off, waving handkerchiefs and bowing. It was very pleasant. Our drive to the Appenweier station delightful. Thence per rail to Freiburg -- Z'e4ringer Hof, capital room -- supper, ramble, and bed early.
At Freiburg we stayed two days, made agreeable and memorable by the acquaintance of Funke, Weismann, Ecker, Kussmaul, Manz, Frau von Hillern, etc. 788 Polly came in for her share of lionizing here. Funke showed us Helmholtz's Sirene and Vocal tuning forks. Manz some retina preparations. Weismann his insect develop[ment] preparations and some others. Ecker the Comp. Anat. Museum.
From Freiburg we took a carriage and drove to St. M'e4rgen (four hours). The first evening ravished us with the beauty of the place, but the next day Polly was ill in bed, and the day after it was cold so that we could not sit about in the open air. Walked to St. Peter however, and made other charming rambles, especially to a peasant's house -- a memorable visit -- in company with the Gr'e4fin Baudisin and her daughter. 789 But after four days we were forced to depart -- the want of indoor accommodation and the fatigue of having people to talk to outbalancing the manifold attractions of the place.
Came back to Freiburg and next morning (Thursday) started for B'e2le. Hotel de la Couronne -- good. There saw the Holbeins and called on His 790 who gave me a morning to his embryological preparations. Reached this place, Thun, (Hotel Freienhof) on Friday evening. We have been here <four> three days greatly enjoying the walks and the quiet and the sunsets. We intended starting for Interlaken this afternoon but continuous rain prevented us. Tomorrow, if fine, we depart.
