Thursday 1st. Yesterday I had a busy day in town. First I went by appointment to Tr'fcbner who wanted me to write a preface to the translation he proposes to issue of Humboldt's letters. 492 But as I object altogether to the system of preface writing, I acknowledged the compliment and declined. Promised him, however, to read the book and give him my opinion on it, and on the necessary omissions. He then went with me to Appleton's agent 493 who is very anxious to secure the early sheets of "The Mill on the Floss." He said he could give as much as 300 'a3 if he were protected against Harper's reprinting the book; but I could not take that risk, so I went to Sampson Low, Harper's agent, who agreed to give 300 'a3 without any conditions. This is 100 more than he offered some 'abweeks'bb days ago. -- Called on Langford and on Lucas, smoked a cigar with the latter, who again returned to the charge about my writing a novel for "Once a Week" and made me promise that if I should change my mind, and think of writing one, he should have the refusal of it. Went to Williams and Norgate, who have been trying to bargain for Tauchnitz, offering only 80 'a3 for the right of reprinting "The Mill" in Germany; but I stood out for 100 'a3 and to that they now agree. This morning read Whewell's "Philosophy of Discovery" 494 -- which, singularly enough, he has sent me. Wrote several letters, and worked at "Animal Studies."
