Tuesday 15th.
Read Gegenbaur and finished "Studies in Animal Life I." 388 Dickens having written to ask Polly if she could on her own terms write a story for "All the Year Round" we have turned the matter over and almost think it feasible. Today I went by appointment to see Lucas and Evans who wanted me to write a novel for "Once a Week" on my own terms; but having agreed with Polly that it was desirable I should not swerve from Science any more, at least just now, I declined. They then asked me to contribute articles on my own terms. 389 After this they approached the subject of a story from Polly, and wanted to know whether her new novel was in the market. I told them I thought it unlikely that she would publish in "Once a Week" and that she felt bound to give Blackwood the refusal; but they assured me that whatever Blackwood offered they would give more. We parted on the understanding that they were to make an offer.
