On Thursday 27 October I had a visit from George Smith 363 of Smith and Elder in consequence of a correspondence between Thackeray and myself, in which I agreed to cooperate in the forthcoming "Cornhill Magazine" if terms and subject suited. Smith evidently wishes to nouer des relations and proposed a series of papers on Natural History which might afterwards form a volume. I agreed to consider his proposal, and he drove me into town, where I called on Smith and Beck, and exchanged my old Microscope for one of their First Class Instruments. Beck was at Aberdeen and heard my papers read at the "British Association." 364 He gave an amusing description of the "row" they excited, and told me that Allen Thomson 365 and Huxley both defended me. I expected the papers would create a disturbance, but hardly expected these eminent men to stand up for me. The proposal of George Smith becomes very seductive and I have almost decided on accepting it. One of my regrets at the idea of finishing the Physiology was lest I should not find a paying scientific subject to take its place.
