Wednesday 9th.
Read Gegenbaur, Grundz'fcge der Vergleichenden Anatomie 375 and finished the rough draft of my first chapter of "Studies in Animal Life." My new Microscope is a great treasure, and will induce me to work even more than before. Went into town. Met Mrs. Edward Chapman, who seemed very glad to see me and asked after Mrs. Evans Lewes, speaking of "Adam Bede" with the usual rapture. Looked in at Bailliere's and bought some books. Dined with Mother. Agnes there. Mother in a high state of pride and delight because Mrs. Abronson had told her that the ex-royal family of France had read the "Life of Goethe" and admiring it very much asked all sorts of questions about me.
Thursday 10th.
Read Gegenbaur Vergleichende Anatomie. Began the rewriting of Chapter 1 of "Studies in Animal Life." After our walk, did a little microscopy and then went to the station to meet Dickens who dined with us. He reminded me that it was three and twenty years ago since I first went down to Twickenham to see him, Eheu! fugaces! 376 We had a delightful talk about all sorts of things, and I walked part of the way home with him and then turned into the Congreves where we 377 had a discussion on George Stephenson, the Religion of Humanity etc.
