My dear Sir
The guinea edition of [Middlemarch] continues selling, so I suppose you also find the sale in parts too good to be interrupted by the cheap edition of which you threw out a hint in a letter which I got just as I was starting for the continent. We may, however, as well come to some arrangement if possible, so as to be ready when the sale in parts has ceased or become too small to be worth consideration. Send me your views on this point.
Are you to be in town this Christmas? If so I wish you would bring me a fur coat. For walking the fur coat is too warm and heavy in any winter we have here; but for our open carriage one would be a great comfort, and the London prices are outrageous because few Londoners wear such things. In Berlin they abound and as you would be certain to know of a good and trustworthy shop where they could be bought at a reasonable price, and as what would fit you would fit me, I should be greatly obliged if you would execute a commission for me to that effect, and bring the coat with you, if you are coming, (wearing it on the way if convenient) or send it by some safe channel.
What would be the price of a good, light, coat. I don't want a [swell] affair -- but I should like a good fur and a light coat. Will you ascertain the prices and let me know? Excuse my putting you to this trouble -- if you can -- and believe me
Yours truly
G. H. Lewes.
