The Priory | Friday.
My dear Main
I have known too well the worry of money cares not to sympathise with you! There was no stipulation with C[hapman] about time of payment, but I certainly thought he would pay on publication, and I will try to see him and arrange that it shall be so. You may be quite sure of getting your money -- but equally or almost sure that C. will be as dilatory and unbusinesslike in that as in all other matters. You may write half a dozen letters and get no money and not even a reply! Don't mind that -- continue to write until he answers! 896
Meanwhile as I should be sorry to think of your not being able to enjoy your holiday and being otherwise hampered for want of a few pounds I send you herewith a small loan, which you can send back when you get the last instalment (if it is paid in instalments) from Chapman. You won't mind accepting this temporary aid from me, I am sure; and for your sake I hope it will be but for a short time. In haste

We are neither of us flourishing -- in fact under doctors hands adopting a new regimen.
