April 77.
My dear Main
The article is very interesting but I have queried one place where there is a d'e9faut de la cuirasse. I hope you will find assimilable food in the volume. The printing has been very tedious.
We have been both invalids. For three weeks I was laid up with rheumatic gout, and no sooner did I get about again than Madonna had another attack of her old enemy -- and that is eight weeks ago yet she is not free. We shan't get down into the country before June -- if then -- the workmen will not have left the house. But I look forward to five months quiet and country air as a restorative for both. I am impatient to begin "Feeling and thought."
If Madonna is well enough we are going at the end of May to Cambridge for a visit. These visits to the universities are always interesting though very fatiguing. When I see Knowles 640 -- if I see him -- I will mention your paper. We are plotting a symposium for the XIX Cent[ury] "on the dread and dislike of science." 641 Mrs. Lewes sends her kind regards.
