My dear Main
Back at last! You will have understood from our silence that your letters were not forwarded. Indeed no one knew where we were, nor did we often know from day to day where we should be. Our plan of a planless journey was thoroughly carried out. It was not a great success however. Mrs. Lewes benefited somewhat, but not very much, and I not at all -- a succession of chills and sore throats followed me everywhere. Now we are only passing through London and on Thursday or Friday go to our house in the country. Blackbrook | Bickley | Bromley, Kent.
Mrs. Lewes wrote off at once to Blackwood giving permission about the sayings from "Middlemarch." I suppose you have nearly finished the printing of Johnson by this time. When I am at Blackbrook I must write the preface.
My own book is nearly printed, some 70 or 80 pages more will complete it.
From your letter I gather that M. Ritter did not come to England but my servant told me a French gentleman had called, without leaving a card. When I asked if his name was Ritter she said yes. I don't attach much value to what she may have remembered in the way of names, and hope M. Ritter did not come.
