Tuesday 17 May 1870.
Dearest Boy
Your letter contained a most welcome indication of your improved condition. We hope to see you both come back ready to "whip your weight in polecats." You will not find us in that vigorous condition! On Sunday we dined at Lord Houghton's (the little Mutter yielding at last to Lady Houghton's kind wishes) and pleasant though it was, we were poor washed out creatures all yesterday, vowing never to do it again! At the dinner there was Annie Thackeray, Mrs. Procter, an American lady, 176 Butler Johnstone, 177 Kinglake, Lecky, Rosetti, Arthur Russell and a crowd in the evening.
Next week we go to Oxford to the Pattisons, and there we shall, I hope, see the last of our dissipation. We had Cara to dinner one day and Spencer to lunch. 178 Last Sunday we had visits from Spencer, Beesly, Lord and Lady Amberley (who have only run up to town for 2 days) Sir H. Holland and Sanderson. So you see the [receptions] are beginning again although the little Mutter would not let a single person except the Congreves know of our return. On Saturday we went to the rehearsal of the New Philharmonic and heard Herr Graan 179 play superbly on the violin -- such a nice modest youth of about 17 or 18! Look out for him should he come in your way.
That -- and writing letters -- and doing the best with headaches -- is the sum of our life since my last. I sent your letter to Kensington 180 in answer to enquiries about your health. I send you the [Athenaeum] in case you might like to see it, though I don't know that there is anything in it.
