My dear Howard
Thanks for the good news. Give the dear Lady our congratulations and from me this advice -- another time let her bear the words of [the Swan] in memory --
If 'twere done when tis done then 'twere well If 'twere done quickly 200 and not keep husband in unexplained suspence, or friends fidgetting at not hearing reports! Further let this be a lesson to her on the [relativity of knowledge] and the delusiveness of [feminine intuition.] She was so certain and so wrong!
More advice: Since she will of course desire that [this fifth transmitter of a lovely face] 201 should be reared on strictly philosophical principles, she can't begin her experiments too early. Here is one: let her order a huge block of Wenham Lake ice, have a hole cut in it sufficient to form a mould for the mottled stranger, and gently pour him into it. If he screams, it will be a proof -- that he doesn't like his quarters -- or that his quarters don't like the ice. Much may be done in this way in ascertaining his views of things. But for this I should need a volume instead of a note: verbum sap.
