Dear Blackwood
By to-day's mail registered I send Part 6 for printers to begin on; part 7 will follow in a few days.
I hope -- in fact I am sure -- that you and Mr. Simpson are highly gratified with the brilliant start of D.D. And as to the grand idea of the placards I am almost tempted to carry it further and walk down Bond Street with one pinned on my brow as a phylactery!
Mrs. Lewes was horribly depressed on Saturday, feeling as she said "quite guilty and that every one would be despising her feeble performance." However Willie's cheering news and assurances and the Times 395 and other voices revived her spirits yesterday. I hear nothing but a chorus of praise and delight -- but that of course. I take good care that nothing comes to her ears or eyes that would sound or read like objection, being so well aware of how she would lay hold of it as proof of her forebodings being justified. And I don't let her see even the enthusiastic criticisms, for many reasons.
Will you please ask Mr. Simpson to put down on my list of presentation copies the name of E. S. Pigott | 28 South Bank | N.W. and send him No. I? My sister in law has not yet sent me her address, so I can't give Mr. Simpson that.
I am curious to know how the third volume will strike you.
We were so pleased to hear of your being yourself again and so sorry to hear that Mr. Simpson still suffers from his bronchial affection.
