My dear Blackwood
First read the enclosed correspondence which is sent you as the most fitting introduction to the final letter. Having read that you can return to this.
Mr. Main's letters have been a source of extreme gratification and sustainment to Mrs. Lewes -- not because of their enthusiastic praise (which is not more than she is constantly receiving without its producing any effect) -- but because of the real insight and appreciation of her meaning on points where most critics and admirers seem to have been dead.
It is in consequence of her sense of having a real appreciator in Mr. Main that she and I both think most pleasantly of his proposal to collect the Wise and Witty Sayings of George Eliot (what do you think of that title which just occurs to me?) which he would assuredly execute not only con amore but con spirito. The book ought not only to be a good speculation in itself but a treasure to readers. If you approve of the scheme I will ask him to write to you direct on the subject.
Mrs. Lewes's health improves -- though slowly -- and fluctuates more than I quite like. She is so impatient to get back to Dodo!
