My dear Blackwood
I am disappointed at your not taking the same view of Main's proposal as we do. It seemed to me one likely to deepen and extend the reputation of the works by bringing distinctly before people's minds what they only see indistinctly, the marvellous wealth of thought and feeling which the works contain. And Main's keen appreciation -- as shown in his letters -- seemed an augury that the work would be done well. But perhaps your are right in wishing to know more about him. Can you get to know more?
Mrs. Lewes improves, though the improvement is not so rapid as might be wished.
Please send back Main's letters when next you write.
I have enjoyed the rereading of Middlemarch greatly -- being in a perpetual gurgle of laughter all the while. I think it will be a coup; and that the scheme will turn out satisfactory.
Do you intend remaining at Edinburgh, or are you only going for a flying visit?
