My dear Blackwood
What do you say to the enclosed proposition. It was made some time ago but I declined, not seeing what convenience it could be to Harper to have proofs he was unable to use, and if he had proofs a month in advance that was surely ample. In spite of what I send he returns to his point. We don't care two straws about having the money paid all at once, though we should like to oblige him, if it involved no risk or inconvenience to you and us. Consult on this and let me know the result. Send me a sentence I can copy for Harper.
Part IV seems to have drawn blood everywhere. How could it fail? The Jewish element has also been more generally popular than we expected. I am curious to see how volume 3 will be received.
Mrs. Lewes continues very feeble, despondent and incredulous of being able to finish effectively. She gets on slowly with part VIII. In a few days I shall send you the early chapters to have them set up so that no delay may keep us in England. I long so to get her away!
We are going to Oxford on the 20th on a visit to Jowett. This is always delightful, but very exciting and I fear it will help to delay the completion.
