My dear Blackwood
We have been here for a fortnight enjoying the quiet and the beauty of the country: and I have been picking up some vigor; but unhappily Mrs. Lewes has not been so fortunate. I hope, however, that another week will tell upon her; after that we must be home again well or ill. You may imagine how indifferent her health has been when I tell you she has only written about 'bc of a volume since 1 January.
If no one has anticipated me I should like to write a paper on Victor Hugo's new Romance. 56 I must tell you that although admitting his power -- nay genius -- he is too intensely French for my taste; and the article would show up his tinsel and antithesis without remorse. I shall run up to London on Wednesday for a day or two, so your reply can go to Blandford Square and I will get the book and bring it down here, if you approve the project. Of course you will be up in May, as usual, and we shall then see you.
