My dear Blackwood
The question of division into parts has greatly [exercised] us latterly but finally we have come to a decision and abide by that already existing in the proofs. Accordingly I telegraphed this morning to cancel Mrs. Lewes's letter of yesterday. 348
"George Eliot's New Story of English Life -- Daniel Deronda -- will appear in Eight Monthly Parts. The first part to be published on February 1."
That is the kind of announcement I should suggest, but leave you and Mr. Simpson to improve on it. I don't know how the gossip paragraph should read. It may as well say that the new book like [Middle-march,] is a story of English life but of our own day, and dealing for the most part in a higher sphere of Society. 349
We are so pleased that Klesmer has laid hold of you. The coincidence of your experience is very interesting -- only last night I was telling Madonna that I thought she was doing a real service to many a misguided girl and youth in thus plainly setting forth the arduousness and difficulties of a career so facile in imagination.
