Tuesday.
My dear Blackwood
We have no objection to offer; but you can understand how very reluctant Mrs. Lewes would be to say a word in favor of such a scheme, 485 or of anything else that tended to her glorification. When you have read his article you will best be able to judge of the advisability or non-advisability of the proposal.
Mrs. Lewes was so poorly after the dinner on Thursday at the Portsmouths (though she enjoyed it greatly) that she determined not to risk the Oxford visit and I wrote to Jowett to say as much, but happily about 12 on Saturday she felt so much better that she agreed to go, and has come back certainly none the worse for the lionizing.
We have friends on Wednesday and Thursday -- and on Saturday we go to the Philharmonic. I know of no other movements; but tell you of these lest you should be contemplating a run up on those days.
Yesterday we had a long letter from the Viceroy full of hope and energy, but with bad news of his health. To-day I met Salvini at dinner. 486
