Tuesday 2 April 61.
My dear Blackwood
Your two letters with their checques have just arrived and I intend saving this post to acknowledge their arrival.
The trifle I had "in hand" was an experiment of which you must judge -- viz. the turning of an old unacted piece of mine into a lively story. As just such an experiment was the fortunate commencement of a connection with you, 531 which has been most agreeable and profitable, I was seduced into repeating it, the more so because I have long since cut the theatre and its affairs. I don't know what you will think of the story. 532 It seems amusing and lively to me; but it may smack too decidedly of its origin; so don't be under any misgiving about returning it, if you don't take to it.
Murray advertizes De Chaillu's book for April. As before hinted, I should like to review it, since it will be full of natural history stories. 533 I'm afraid if we go to Italy I shall not be industrious enough to write; but be assured that if I write at all, it will be for you.
I can sympathize with your swelled cheek. Some three or four years ago I was a martyr to it and it always indicates an anarchical condition of Schleswig Holstein, as you remark.
Mrs. Lewes will write, I suppose tomorrow, meanwhile she bids me send her kind regards. I think we go to the Proph'e8te tonight -- that is if Langford has a box. 534
Ever yours
G. H. Lewes.
