My dear Blackwood
I wrote to you the other day with the proof so that this morning I need only dispatch the bit of "business" which prompts this letter. Liebig gave a Lecture here, on the Identity of the Physical Forces, which was very popular, owing to its clear exposition of facts only known to the learned. He has given me the Lecture, and communicated to me the 12 new "Letters" which he is preparing for the new edition of his "Chemical Letters." The Lecture he wishes me, if possible, to make known in England; and he has been so very kind that, much as I dislike translating, I have gratified him by the promise that I would translate it for him. My first thought is for Maga. 390 Would you like to have it? Not having been published, even in Germany, and having Liebig's name attached, might be sufficiently attractive for you -- but unless you would really like to have it, pray don't on my account entertain the idea. Only tell me. I merely wish to give you the first offer.
I find writing here very difficult so much time is absorbed in seeing and discussing. What with Art on the one hand and Science on the other, my brain is like Buridan's ass 391 between water and hay, uncertain which to attack first; except that that stupid young Edward died before he could make a choice whereas I am more likely to die from choosing too much.
E. sends kind regards, And believe me
Ever yours faithfully
G. H. Lewes.
