Luitpold Strasse, Munich | 18 June 1858.
My dear Blackwood
Herewith proof, and an article on Respiration and Suffocation.
Thanks for Maga. We both especially admire the article on Religious Biographies both in tone and style; and indeed the sight of the familiar face is quite pleasant here. The German reviews we carefully avoid.
What a poor article that is in the Revue on the Clerical Scenes! but nevertheless one calculated to have some reverberations in England, and do good to the author's reputation, and aid the sale of the cheap edition. I see you are advertizing "Seaside Studies" with a "courage worthy of a better cause" -- and hope that when the people go to the coast they will exhibit a more lively desire to possess that invaluable work. By the way that scrap from the Daily News excites the most ludicrous images in my mind. I see myself in Academic cap and gown smilingly strewing "the path of learning with flowers" (sea anemones I suppose?) at once affable and pedantic, pottering and big wiggish -- but above all unsaleable! A mild watering pot of Science, a zoologist who has taken to the "hat trick" of the wizards, and from the intestines of a mollu[sc] keeps incessantly producing bouquets which he scatters among his "overflowing audiences" (three men in the pit, and one box order.) -- that is the hero of the Daily News criticism.
G.E. begs his kindest regards and believe me,
Ever faithfully yours
G. H. Lewes.
