My dear Blackwood
I have just returned from Switzerland 1157 where I have been to see my boys and had the delight of seeing them in splendid health, very happy, and making progress. On my return I found your pleasant letter, and the two copies of [Seaside Studies,] for which thanks. Your advice about the Tyrol had already been anticipated in petto. We start on the 6th for Salzburg, and after a breath of Alpine scenery go to Vienna, Prag, and Dresden, staying at the last named place a few weeks. If you have any proof to send me and do not despatch it by the 2d, please address it Dresden poste restante.
We shall leave our friends here with real regret. It is they who have made our stay memorable and advantageous. The place itself -- especially the climate -- we shall quit with great cheerfulness. We have had tropical heat, and now suddenly great coats are in requisition! G.E. suffers from the climate, but works on with untiring energy. We have puzzled ourselves greatly to divine the reason why Mudie 1158 has never advertized "The Scenes" among his works, although many works very far less significant, and of which he must have taken fewer copies are named in every list. As he doesn't know the author it can't be personal whim -- is it to you? E. of course takes it as a sign that Mudie doesn't think much of the book. I utterly scout that idea. He sends his kind regards. And believe me

I have been doing some capital work in the laboratories of my friends here, 1159 where an extensive apparatus and no end of frogs are at my disposal! When government establishes a physiological Institute professors (and amateurs) can work in clover.
I stopped a day at Zurich to see Moleschott, 1160 who invited some celebrities to see me, and I had quite a little ovation. My portrait has been published in one of the German periodicals, with a biography which I should like to see -- one always learns something new in such memoirs! This portrait -- as well as the [Goethe] -- had reached Zurich, so that when I presented myself at Moleschott's his wife, who first said he was not at home, suddenly recognized me, and seizing me by the hand dragged me triumphantly to her husband and we had a "tremendous recognition" as Forster said when he met Leech 1161 in the Strand.
