My dear Blackwood
By this post I dispatch two articles for future use -- the best of the series hitherto, I think. The others will be written under the inspiration of the Munich pictures. We start on Tuesday.
Do you observe the "Studies" are quoted in two articles of Frazer this month? One by Kingsley, 385 and the other by Broderip. 386 Owen tells me the latter is so charmed with the book that he is meditating an article for the Quarterly on it -- that would be luck!
I had got thus far when your letter arrived. No, I do not know who the whelp of the Literary Gazette 387 is, although I suspect. At any rate he places himself out of court not only by the obvious animus, but by the deliberate falsification of which he is guilty: it was this which made Owen mention the article to me -- otherwise I should not have seen it. The Literary Gazette is printed for private circulation otherwise I should expose the writer. Before the book appeared I heard that there was to be an attack on it -- and as the book treads on the corns of some naturalists it is but reasonable to expect they will cry out -- with eloquence or abuse as may be.
