My dear Blackwood
Troublesome as I find the reading of proofs I think it decidedly advisable that I should see those of the Chemistry. Moreover when I drew up the imports, it was of course for 1857 and these must now be cancelled, and 1858 substituted. 2 That alone would render it desirable I should see proofs or have back the original.
Respecting my own proofs I am much obliged to Mr. Brown 3 for taking the trouble of reading them and making queries; only I should be glad if he would make them when he sends the revise and so save me a third dispatch.
What you say of Adam Bede quite falls in with my own experience and has greatly cheered G.E. who is prone to despond. I feel in reading the proofs the same emotions and shed the same tears as over the m.s. This is a good sign. Indeed the perfect truthfulness of every page has from the first assured me that the success of the book must be enduring.
Respecting publication G.E. says that if 1 February is the earliest day on which it can conveniently appear nothing more is to be said; but in his opinion every day that can be gained before the rumour may chance to reach critical circles would be in his favor.
