My dear Blackwood
By a strange coincidence G.E. was with me when your letter 1097 arrived with its checque (for which thanks) and he was greatly relieved and inspirited by your approbation, for with his customary misgivings he had no belief in anybody's feeling the sort of delight in his personages he feels, or in any one (I, of course, counting as nobody!) liking the story. Your hearty letter made him quite comfortable and he will doubtless write with fresh confidence -- till the next desponding fit comes. Simpkin's rational demand for more copies has also not been without effect.
He bids me say that no more is yet written; although all is laid out; but before he goes away he will send m.s.s for another part. 1098
We are glad to know you got your cab, as we had some misgivings lest, giving us more of your time our pleasure in the river-stroll and chat might have frustrated some other engagement. We were so pleased at the chance which brought you to town, since our absence in May would have prevented a meeting for a long while.
