My dear Blackwood
Now I know you approve the method of Johnston 1074 I shall finish in comfort. Send me back Vol. 1, however, as occasional touches may be added, unless you want to begin printing.
My next paper on Food and Drink 1075 will be sent off in a few days. Such a collection of facts and arguments has not I believe been made before, even by erudite Germans.
G.E. is pleased with the good news, as he always is with anything in that direction. I agree with you that having secured the admiration of the best judges that of the public must follow. It was six weeks before Jane Eyre showed any decided movement in the way of sale. 1076
Faraday has written a letter 1077 which G.E. treasures beside that of Dickens. Has the [Spectator] or [Examiner] pronounced? Rigid secrecy as to authorship will help the interest in the book, as well as preserve E's cheerfulness.
I shall be anxious to hear what subscription there is of Sea-Side
Studies -- and I should be hopeful about it, if a public were secured to begin with. With kind regards to your brother
