Holly Lodge | 10 August 1860.
My dear Blackwood
I did not think I should be ready for this month, but as you are in danger of running short you may count upon me. It shall be done. I have had my holiday now and propose to make Maga's back creak with my weight!
Rejoice with me, as I know you will, that my oldest boy has come in at the head of the poll -- although one of his competitors was 23 years of age, and another had already been in a situation. I don't know whether I told you he was to compete for a place in the Secretary's office of the Post Office? 608 He is now launched -- and off my hands. Both his mother and myself are naturally very joyous thereat. We have him still with us, and until he marries hope always to have him.
Laurence will no doubt gladly make you a copy of the portrait. When I see him tomorrow I will ask.
What a sight that review must have been! Arthur's Seat and sunshine would be enough to make even the awkward squad look splendid but such a corps and such a crowd of spectators may well have made the perfervidum Scotus tingle!
Schmitz I saw in London. He has daughters growing up and does not therefore take puberty into his family circle.
We are looking forward to the Major's visit. I wonder whether the "great secret" will be really a surprise or not.
Mrs. Lewes sends her kindest regards to both and Believe me
Ever yours
G.H.L.
