My dear Chapman
I have written to Call to-day with my opinion -- I am sorry to say unfavorable. With a great deal of good matter, the article wants a certain [knack] in the writer to make it effective; and only a man of wit could make it amusing. 425
I was very happy to be able to give to friendship the amount of time and trouble in this matter, the more so as I feel a good deal of sympathy with him. 'Tis no light matter to spend days and nights over an article to get in love with your subject and your execution of it, and then find it unacceptable in headquarters!
