Tuesday.
My dear Mr. Fiske 867
Yesterday an American called here stating that he had an introduction from you. I was out, but I write now to beg you to decline all applications for introductions. We are forced to see so many more people than is good for our health, and therefore wish as much as possible to limit our circle. It is only in case of people exceptionally interesting, like yourself, that we willingly enlarge our circle. I was obliged in politeness to ask your friend Mr. [Jeremiah] Curtin, 868 when I met him with you; but habitually I never ask strangers to come. You understand this, don't you? It is not unsociableness but feebleness.
Ever yours truly,
G. H. Lewes.
