Thursday.
My dear Nephew
Your loving and suffering aunt -- who begs me to say that she was not too subdued by pain to enjoy the sweet perfume of the flowers you sent, and the sweet feeling which moved the sender -- is of the opinion that the 2000 £ 612 had better be invested without any risk -- so we leave you to choose the most favorable Scotch and English Debentures.
Dr. Clark says there is no sort of doubt that all her late discomfort and present pain arise from the renal calculus. The dear man came up last night after his late dinner and long day's work to see her and this morning Mrs. Clark called and left some fine Scotch oatmeal for gruel. Clark hearing that she wished for Scotch oatmeal exclaimed to think of the hundreds of Scotchmen who if they heard George Eliot wanted oatmeal wouldn't hurry up with sacks of it to her door! And so his wife was the buglewoman of the Scotch corps!
My gout decidedly better and to-day the aunt is in less pain. Altogether it has been a much milder attack than the former ones.
